Marietta Memorial Hospital South Pavilion
Pickering Associates and Marietta Memorial Hospital have had a partnership for many years starting with a lightning strike, causing extensive damage to the main switchboard and putting the hospital in the dark for about fourteen hours. This exposure in the weakness of their electrical system and secondary back-up resulted in multiple projects correcting these deficiencies. To date we have performed engineering and supervised construction for over 200 projects ranging from small to large, in all our disciplines. Based on this relationship, we put together a team for the proposed new South Pavilion wing and were awarded the design package.
This fast-track multi-story project involved new surgery suites and an overall new look to the front of the hospital. Our role was electrical engineer and assisted the design team in all disciplines related to the electrical system, fire alarm, and security system. The project involved working with a construction manager and the hospital to meet an aggresive schedule and constantly changing floor plans and budget to stay within the owner's expectations.
The project presented an overall engineering challenge of an existing structure that was built in 1929 with major additions in 1952, 1960, 1974, and in 1986, with this new 95,000 square foot wing. This challenge required us to develop a plan to seamlessly integrate a new facility with the old renovated electrical system and maintain a consistent design, easily maintainable by the maintenance staff.
Some highlighted design elements include a smoke evacuation fan integrated into the fire alarm system and when activated would purge smoke from the atrium and open the automatic doors to ensure safe escape of occupants.
With this new wing, Marietta Memorial Hospital has become a state-of-the-art healthcare provider. Pickering Associates was pleased to be a crucial part of the design team and part of the hospital's vision for the Mid-Ohio Valley.
