W.H. Sammis Plant

The W.H. Sammis Plant is First Energy's largest coal-fired power plant in Ohio, consisting of seven coal-fired units and five oil-fired peaking units producing a total of 2,233 megawatts of electricity.  Pickering Associates has been involved in several Design-Build projects at this facility including those following.

Storeroom Annex Building
This 21,000 sq. ft., two-story annex was designed to house a cafeteria, contractor lounge and a store room with a loading dock on the first floor and administrative offices on the second floor.  A very unique part of this metal building was the independent second floor in order to reduce the size and cost of the building.  Site work included storm water management.

Waste Water Treatment Building
Due to the expansion of First Energy's Sammis Plant Facility, a new Waste Water Treatment Building was necessary.  Pickering Associates provided all architectural and engineering design services, including electrical, for this 22,000 sq. ft. pre-engineered metal building.  This project was unique in the incorporation of sixteen monorails to be used in the operation of the facility.  Special attention was required for the structural support and connections of the monorails to the building frame.  This facility was also designed with future construction in mind, therefore a 40' tall by 150' long fire wall was necessary to separate the occupancies.
