Jesse Daubert worked with Mrs. Jen Wells 8th grade Career Search class at Belpre High school. This was a group of 11 students. Jesse met with this class on 3 occasions throughout October and November. This is an older school building where lunch is served in a gym that has an elevated auditorium area. The pretend project Jesse did with the students was to dimension the auditorium space, and their deliverable was to create a general arrangement and a perspective view of that space converted into a “high-tech” classroom.
During the first meeting Jesse gave the students the background of the project then took them to the auditorium and gave them measuring devises to dimension the space. During that time Jesse also took the 3D scanner and scanned the entire area, but he did not tell the kids what he was doing, even when they asked. In the second meeting Jesse showed the students the point cloud from the scanner, which they seemed to really enjoy, and then they reviewed their dimensions. The students also worked between these sessions to start brainstorming the types of “high-tech” classroom things they would want in their class, and after which shared some of their ideas.
Between the second and final meetings a colleague helped Jesse out by taking some of the ideas the students had and modeling them into a 3D mode. The model was than imbedded within the ReCap point cloud of how a classroom could look and included some funny elements that the students loved. For the final meeting the kids presented their renderings and general arrangements and then Jesse presented the 3D model his colleague prepared for the students. A video of that model can be found in the link below.
All in all, the sessions were a huge success with the students, and really got them excited about the different possibilities to come for technology in classrooms that they could help build! Pickering Associates is extremely grateful to Jesse Daubert for facilitating this event, as well as to Mrs. Jen Wells and her 8th grade class for being a part of this great experience!
