Pickering Associates is pleased to announce Civil Engineers Caleb Jenkins P.E., and Tyler Eppley P.E. recently passed the Principles and Practices of Engineering Exam, earning them the title of Professional Engineer (PE). The PE Exam is the second required exam for engineers and is taken after the completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
The PE Exam is created and scored by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). NCEES is a national non-profit organization composed of engineering and surveying licensing boards representing all states and U.S. territories. Much like the examinations required for public accounting, law and other professions, exam candidates spend a significant amount of time preparing for the exam.
As Professional Engineers (PE), they will now have the ability to sign off and place seals on drawings and reports they issue to ensure the highest performance standards are taken.
Caleb found a career in engineering through his studies. “Math and science were always easy to understand. Engineering is a way I can make the communities we work for better, by being able to design a better infrastructure for their use,” Caleb commented. Caleb has been with Pickering Associates for the past two years. Currently, he works in both our Civil and Construction Administration departments. The test took over two months to prepare for, which was on the short side for Caleb’s liking. When asked what this means for his career, he commented, “Passing the PE opens up the ability to oversee and manage projects.”
Tyler story varies from Caleb’s. Tyler found Engineering a little later in his career search. “I started in pre-med my first year at Ohio University Zanesville. I was on the pre-med route for roughly a year and then decided to switch to engineering once I started to attend Ohio University Athens,” commented Tyler. “Engineering runs in my family. I have two brothers that are Civil Engineers, one cousin, and an uncle that is a Petroleum Engineer.” Tyler has been working here at Pickering Associates for a little over two years now. He is also a member of the Civil Engineering Department and works on converting conceptual designs into construction documents. “This can look very different depending on the client and each project has its own set of unique challenges and obstacles to overcome,” Tyler stated. This is Tyler’s second time taking the PE Exam, studying over 60 hours in two months. When asked what this could mean for his career, Tyler commented, “Passing the PE exam won’t immediately affect my career but is a stepping stone to unlock future opportunities for me within the company. On a shorter timeline, it allows clients to have more confidence in my design decisions and judgment.”
Congratulations to both Caleb and Tyler on this great accomplishment, and we wish you the best of luck as you continue to grow and develop your career.
