The Wirt County Health Services Association broke ground on their new Wirt County Nursing Home Project Friday morning. The new, thirty-bed facility will feature both private and semi-private rooms, as well as a monitored exterior courtyard for resident use. The new facility is 22,000 square feet and will offer local resources for the men and women of Wirt County.

“Community focused projects are always special to be a part of,” explains lead architect, Christopher Algmin of Pickering Associates. “This will be the first nursing home in Wirt County, and will allow residents to stay in the very community they’ve helped build. Residents were the top priority in designing the building. I’m excited for the city of Elizabeth and Wirt County Health Services Association. The staff are excited, too, and are very passionate about resident care.”

This project is possible partially because elected officials passed legislation to lift a long-standing moratorium on nursing homes. The concept of the project has been a dream for Wirt County residents for about 30 years.

On hand for the groundbreaking were members of the Wirt County Health Services Association board of directors, Dr. Tracy Hendershot, Elizabeth Mayor Penny McVay, Senator Donna Boley, Delegate Anna Border, Michael McCartney of WesBanco Bank, Tim Coffman of Phoenix Associates and Christopher Algmin from Pickering Associates.
